PBIS Kick Off on Wednesday

The Sparta Meadowview Intermediate School, a school that houses 4th and 5th grade students, will be doing a kickoff event to implement a new initiative referred to as P.B.I.S. or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.  The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is asking to develop systematic approach to better behavior in schools.  They want this to be a proactive, school-wide event that involves all students.  The program teaches students expected behaviors when they are in areas such as the cafeteria, playground, hallway, bathroom ,etc.
In order to implement this new program , a leadership team was formed in our building.  The team was made up of the school counselor, regular education teachers, special education teachers, and building administration.  This group worked with the entire staff to develop lessons that would focus on expected behaviors for students while they were in the previously mentioned areas (hallways, bathroom, playground, etc.)  We are now ready to implement those lessons.
To do so, we have our working with Fort McCoy to implement our kick off event.  Being that we have so many families in our district that are employed by Fort McCoy or are active military members, we felt this would be a great group effort.  We will be kicking off our P.B.I.S. implementation by doing a “boot camp.”  Fort McCoy donated used military fatigues to the staff.  Staff will be dressing up in the fatigues as we run the station.  We thought this would be a great way to incorporate this new program and the students would enjoy seeing staff in a new light.

Included is a link on P.B.I.S. to give you a better understanding (and explanation) of what it is.

Stay Connected on Facebook

We are moving in a new direction to keep families informed.  The school has created a Facebook page which will keep you updated on upcoming events.  There also will be daily posts as to what happened in school that day, important notes coming home, or other important information.  Check it out today and “Like” the page.  You can find Meadowview Intermediate on Facebook in one of two ways.  On Facebook, simply do a search for “Meadowview Intermediate” or click on the “Facebook” link at the right of this page.

Welcome to the 2010/2011 School Year

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you back to the 2010-2011 school year.  We hope that you all had a fun filled summer and are anxiously waiting the start of the new school year on September 1, 2010.  We have been very busy preparing for your arrival and are looking forward to seeing you.

On behalf of the Meadowview Intermediate staff, I invite you to our Open House on Thursday, August 26, 2010.  We will begin promptly at 5:00 pm in the large gymnasium with the 4th grade students, all Montessori students and their parents.  After a brief introduction, we will adjourn to the classrooms where you can meet the teachers personally and listen to a brief presentation regarding your child’s classroom guidelines.  There will be an opportunity for your child to practice opening their locker, put school supplies in their desk and receive several different forms that should be returned on the first day of school.  When class room meetings are complete, 4th grade students and parents should be sent to the cafeteria where they can take care of paying for assignment notebooks, lunch money, turning in papers, ect.

The 5th grade parents will begin in the cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. completing their paper work and paying for assignment notebooks and lunch money.  At 6:00 p.m. they will proceed to the large gym to meet with Mr. Fischer, from there they will proceed to their classrooms to meet with their teachers

I know that children are becoming anxious and excited about returning to school.  Some students would like to practice opening their lockers and see their classroom.  However, we ask that students not come into the building until Open House because the custodians are still completing several projects in preparation for the new school year.  Thank you very much for your assistance with this matter.

As mentioned, we have several documents included in this mailing.  The table on the backside of this letter indicates which documents are included and what you should do in preparation for the August 26th Open House.  Your cooperation in completing the enclosed documents and returning them on August 26th will provide for a smooth start to the school year.

Teacher Requests for 2010-2011

I am starting to receive more and more requests from parents in regards to classroom placements for next year.  Before you send in any further requests, please wait until additional information has been released.  At this time we are looking at reconfiguring some of the classrooms for next year due to class sizes and possible staff retirements.  We will not be offering as many sections of looping as we have in the past.  We will also have some looping teachers that will be teaching in a teaching in a traditional classroom where they remain at a specific grade level to teach.  More information will be coming out in the future that will inform you which teachers will be teaching at specific grade levels.  I appreciate your patience in this matter as we work through this reconfiguration.

Box Tops Collection for PTG

Congratulations to all of the Meadowview Intermediate students and parents!  Due to your efforts of collecting Box Tops for Education, we were able to raise $460 for the Meadowview Intermediate PTG!  Keep collecting those Box Tops as we continue to raise money for our PTG.  In the future, one thing that would help would be to trim the edges of the Box Tops.  We are not able to submit them unless they are cut out on the dashed line.

Keep up the great work and thanks again for your support!

Attention Parents of 5th Grade Students

Parents/Guardians of 5th Grade Students,
Fifth Grade Students will meet individually with Ms. Cash, our band instructor between March 1st and March 9th to try band instruments.  Students will bring a schedule home so you know what day and time your child meets with Ms. Cash.  You may come in at that time, as well, to be in on the excitement of picking the instrument.  Instrument rentals may be done on Parent Teacher Conference nights.  Dana’s/Schmitt Music will be here to do the paperwork, but students will not start lessons until June 7th.  Instruments will be delivered to school in time for the first lesson.  If your child will be out of town for most of the summer, they may start in the Fall instead.
Call Ms. Cash at the Middle School (269-2185) if you have any questions.

Report Cards Sent Home

Trimester 1 concluded last Wednesday.  This means that the first grading period has concluded and report cards have been printed.  Your child should have brought home that report card yesterday after school.  If you have not seen it, please ask your child about its location.  It is important that you review the report card with your child and discuss their progress.  It is not important to focus on the grade itself, but the overall progress your child is making.  If you have questions and concerns about your childs report card, I would encourage you to contact their teacher and ask the necessary questions.

Just a reminder that the 5th grade concert will be held at the Sparta High School next Tuesday, December 15, 2009 beginning at 7 p.m.  They have been working hard to present a wonderful concert!

School Performance Report

Each year the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction releases school performance reports for school districts throughout the state.  The reports provide performance results of the WKCE testing that takes place in the fall each year.  I am including the link to the performance report so that you are able to see how we are performing as a district.  If you have any questions please contact me at 269-2187.
